I thought a lot about the relationship between having fun and being successful at your craft. We are different types of artists in this world, with different personalities and approaches regarding our art. Some of us may be extremely methodical, having a clear previsualisation of their artistic outcome . Others might be purely intuitive, letting themselves guided by their inner flow and not looking for a certain outcome. Others might start from an intuitive stage and then use the technical knowledge to filter their vision into an artistic form. No matter the approach, I personally think that having fun at your craft is essential in succeeding on a long term. From my own experience, I know that all the moments when I tried to be too serious and think too much about my subjects or frames the results were mostly unsuccessful. When I decided to go to photo shooting sessions without having a pre organised idea in my mind, the results were mostly positive, quite surprising. I don't argue that this is the right approach, but it works for me. Each time when I left the house being positive and just wanting to have fun, somehow, my inner child treated the craft as a game, letting me to be creative, open to new things, approaches, discovering or rediscovering the subjects with a sense of wander.
Having fun helped me to feel good. Feeling good helped me to feel inspired, to get into a deep connection with my creative side. In such moments, I forgot about time, about rules, about being technical. In these moments, my eyes started to see through my heart and my pictures came alive one by one because they were taken with ease and pleasure. Returning home and looking through my photos after such fun moments, I always had a good bunch of selections for my portfolio. When I went out thinking mostly of technical details or of how to get the best light, I ended mostly with no pictures in my personal collection. I am pretty sure that other artists feel the same or have been through similar experiences. What about you? What is your approach? Are you intuitive or technical? Are you willing to organise in smallest details each of your art sessions or you just decide to have fun? How important is for you to have fun while doing your craft? When you think about fun, what comes to mind?
